Hey, someone I don't personally know actually joined [info]aaronburr!

[info]aisb23. Interesting. I hope he posts something, because that is one sad lack-of-community I have going on over there.

You know what's really good? Bubbletea. I got some today that was supposed to be coconut-flavored, but that was fully not coconut I was tasting. It was something fragrant and non-coconutty. But it was good anyway. That's how good the stuff is.

I will now write something, I swear. I'm having problems with my not!African revolution story because I really don't know anything about Africa, and even though the location of my story is an imaginary country that just happens to be very similar to those in North Africa, I feel kind of guilty writing about it. But then again, it's not like the people who write fantasy set in some obscure medieval British/Scandinavian location really know much about medieval Britain/Scandinavia, either... I think?

No, they really don't. Mostly. There's really just an archetypical fantasy world that everyone uses to a certain extent.

Heh, yeah, I think it's like, the first people to write novels set there actually did the research, and everyone else who followed in their footsteps just absorbed their research and used it (or didn't, as it may be) in their own books.

Bubbletea is delicious, except I couldn't finish the one I had since it was too sweet. plus, the tapioca balls don't taste like tapioca. :((((

I think it would be really weird if the tapioca balls tasted like tapioca. O.O And yeah, I don't usually get the fruity flavors because they're so ridiculously sweet.

I looove tapioca. that's why I wanted to try bubble tea in the first place, haha.

I'll get one of the non-fruity flavors next time, then. thanks :)

What kind of problems?

You could always try researching Africa? Might generate some interesting bunnies.

Problems of conscience. :P

The problem is, I don't really know where to start researching, like, what to type into Google. And the location is just made-up enough to make things not apply... hmm. I'll try and do some kind of research at least.

Pesky thing, conscience.

Looking at the wikipedia article on Africa might give you a place to start. Either read the interesting/possibly relevant bits and see where they take you or see if the see also or external links are helpful. The resources might also have some useful books, though that involves actually leaving the house. I haven't actually looked at the article on Africa so it might be useless, but it's worth a shot.

Also, if you have a specific question, you could try asking in [info]little_details. Though I have no idea if anyone there knows anything about Africa.

Sometimes Google is not the answer. My advice is to go to the library and pick out random books. When I'm doing something set in a culture I don't know much about I always use the glossies with big color pictures from the children's section, but whatever works. Read (or skim) random books. Even if you don't get inspiration, you should at least have some more cultural grounding. Hope that helps.

Ah, the old-fashioned library. A place where, mostly, I am too lazy to go. But I will attempt to conquer my laziness.

People often write about what they don't know. I assume that you are not trying to make up things and pass them off as African, so that's okay. It would probably be awfully interesting if you researched, though.
